Juniors

Crown green bowls is a sport that can be played by anyone from 5 years old to 105 years old. So why should it just be adults that have all the fun? Within North Lancashire and Fylde, we try to make sure that this isn’t the case.

Over the last 35 years, as a County Association we have a proud record of both introducing and developing young players in the sport. Whether you have played before, or just want to try something different (and fun!!!), we have coaches and clubs that are happy to help you enjoy a game.

If you would like to start playing bowls, please send an email to our County Development Officer, Steve Clamp at steve.clamp.bowls@gmail.com and he will put you in contact with local clubs and coaches that will be able to help you.

Many schools are now starting to introduce the sport into their sporting curriculum due to its inclusive nature. The sport helps to develop hand eye co-ordination, balance, social skills and strategy whilst also being a great way of undertaking gentle exercise.

Many young people’s first introduction to the sport is through a family member who may play themselves. This is a great way to start but, even if they do not know anyone that plays, starting is easy. Most clubs will have some small bowls (or even jacks) that a junior will be able to use and, other than a pair of trainers, there are no real costs to trying the sport.

Many coaches across North Lancashire and Fylde introduce junior bowlers into the sport with a system called ‘Wuds 4 Fun’. This is best described as a hybrid between crown green bowls and crazy golf, and is great fun for all the family. By starting with this version of the sport, the basics can very quickly be learnt in a fun and engaging way.

As a junior bowler, the opportunities for development are endless. The sport can be played for fun and enjoyment or, if you prefer, can be played competitively in a safe, inclusive environment. Many clubs across the County host junior competitions throughout the season (March to October) and the County has representative teams within both the BCGBA Junior National Championship and the Federation of Bowls Junior Tournaments.
